Taking care of teeth is an important part of oral hygiene which ensures that you have a clean and healthy mouth. Though we always advocate for periodic dental visits to check on the oral state of your mouth, there are 3 things you need to do on your own for a better oral hygiene. They may be viewed as basic but these are important daily oral hygiene practices that should never be overlooked.
1. Brush your teeth at least twice every day; however, if you can, brush them after every meal. It is important to brush your teeth before you go to bed and when you wake up. Remember to use the right toothbrush, which has the appropriate kind of bristles. Brush your teeth using a circular motion. Avoiding pressing hard on your teeth when brushing so as not to damage your teeth or the gum line. Do remember to replace your toothbrush after two or three months.
2. A brush after every meal may not be applicable, thus flossing is the best alternative. Every meal you will take will always deposit food particles in your teeth. Flossing is a healthy oral hygiene practice that will remove those particles and keep your teeth from having plague. This will require you to know the right finger technique of holding the floss string. The dentists and oral hygienist at Stony Brook Family Dentistry will show you the proper flossing technique if you need guidance on this. We always insist on taking things slow when flossing. Do not be aggressive to avoid friction or damaging your gum line.
3. Do not shy away from using fluoride mouthwash. In fact, rinse your mouth with it after brushing or flossing your teeth. There are several fluoride mouthwash brands in market and you can talk to your dentist to find out which is the best to use.
Now that you know about the 3 things you need to do for a better oral hygiene, you still will have to plan for a dental checkup. You should plan to visit us at least 2 or 3 times in a year.
