Many patients approach us about getting braces and the types that we currently offer here at Stony Brook Family and Laser Dentistry. Although the field of orthodontics now offers a wide range of braces today, we provide the three most common types in the dental industry today namely the traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, and Invisalign clear braces. If you have been thinking about getting braces but you are unsure of the type that’s right for you, knowing the pros and cons of each one may help in the decision-making process.
- Ceramic braces – these are oftentimes referred to as clear braces because of the materials they are made from. The brackets used can either be clear or customized to match the color of your natural teeth. Pros: Ceramic braces are not as noticeable the traditional metal type and will normally straighten your teeth quicker than what Invisalign clear braces do. Cons: If they are not cared for properly, ceramic braces will stain. Plus, they are more costly than traditional metal braces.
- Invisalign clear braces – these are customized, clear aligners that resemble mouth guards in appearance. A set typically consists of 18 to 30 of these aligners which are replaced in succession every 2 weeks. Pros: Invisaligns are almost clear and can easily be removed for drinking and eating as well as brushing and flossing after every meal. Cons: These are not available for young children and cannot treat the more serious dental issues. Plus, they are an expensive option for straightening your teeth, are more costly if replacement is required, and may require a longer treatment period.
- Metal braces – although metal braces consist of brackets and wires that are more noticeable than those of ceramic braces, the brackets used today are considerably smaller in size so they are less noticeable than metal brace components of the past. Pros: Of the three types, these are the most cost-effective. Cons: Metal braces are the most noticeable type of the three.
