For many people, the decision to get dentures is a challenging one.
Most people associate dentures with potential discomfort and embarrassment. If you feel this way about dentures, it’s not your fault! Many commercials have preyed on this image.
When you look at advertisements for denture creams or adhesives, they focus on the idea that you might “lose your teeth” when eating in public — or that you might not be able to enjoy your favorite foods. All of these issues arise from poor fitting of dentures.
With modern dentures, however, these issues are marginal and remote. Dentures can be fit to your mouth in a better and more precise way than has ever been possible before.
Plus, you can even start using them right away.
While most people think of “full dentures,” there are actually two options:
Full dentures are used when all of your original teeth need to be removed. If there’s a minority of healthy teeth in the mouth, then sometimes all of the teeth will be removed so that dentures can be used. However, this is not always the case.
With conventional full dentures, the gums are given time to heal fully before dentures are used. With immediate full dentures, dentures are introduced to your mouth right away. This can be more convenient, but does require a follow-up visit.
If you have several unhealthy or damaged teeth, and there are more than can be replaced through a dental implant, partial dentures may be the answer. Partial dentures are very similar to a dental bridge, but they can be removed as needed.
The idea of “immediate full dentures” is relatively new in dental practice. Not only can dentures be made to fit better than ever before, but they can be implemented right away so you never have to be without teeth.
When dentures fit well, they can be almost as good as your original teeth. Plus, modern dentures look great and will give the appearance of beautiful, natural teeth. The key is making sure that you get your dentures from an experienced family dentist.
