Although many of our patients at Stony Brook Family and Laser Dentistry are familiar with Invisalign for correcting a smile, most are not quite sure of how this process can really work. To many, it seems as though the clear aligners should not be able to generate such great changes, but the manner in which this is done is actually quite similar to braces. This makes Invisalign appropriate for a number of spacing and straightening problems that may even be quite pronounced.
Many of our patients have had great success with this procedure, and it has been used to correct any of the following concerns:
All of these very noticeable issues can be easily corrected with the clear braces. While many patients are aware that these problems affect appearance, they do not always understand the way they can also impact jaw alignment, speaking, and eating.
Regular braces are used to realign teeth and correct spacing issues by slowly causing movement in the way that the teeth are seated in the jaw. Even traditional braces use small steps for repositioning, and this happens each time a patient visits the orthodontist for a tightening or an adjustment. The difference is that the metal braces are anchored for the duration, and the changes are manually enacted.
With Invisalign braces, the adjustments occur when one aligner is switched out for the next. This has the same effect as getting braces tightened, but does not do it through a permanent attachment. One aligner is worn until the teeth shift into the desired positioning, and then a new tray is used to get to the next step. Although the end result is quite noticeable, the process does this in a way that can appear completely natural.
